Consideration of Job Satisfaction

Shelby Daly

How are you measuring job satisfaction for your constituents to help prevent turnover?

Retention of advanced practice providers (APPs) is an issue of critical importance to healthcare leaders. High APP turnover negatively affects an organization's ability to meet patient needs, maintain quality of care, and control costs.

How do you going to identify in real time the triggers of APP dissatisfaction and intent to resign. Some variables to consider are either intrinsically or extrinsically motivated for this employee decision.

Specifically, extrinsic factors or dissatisfiers arise from the work environment. They include supervision, policies, administration, security, status, salary, working conditions, and interpersonal relationships. Intrinsic factors or satisfiers stem from job performance. They include work–life balance and environment, the potential for growth, responsibility, and advancement.

Turnover is costly due to the time spent on orientation and training new hires, as well as supplemental support for their credentialing, continuing education, and professional growth. Therefore, it is important to identify the factors that influence their job satisfaction and intent to leave.
