Is Your Elevator Pitch Egotistical?

Shelby Daly

Are ATEP programs equipping students with the proper tools to create an effective personal elevator speech or pitch about the Athletic Training profession? Are elevator speeches narcissistic?

Stakeholder - all parties that have a vested interest or dependence on what you do. This is an important aspect to a pitch due to all stakeholders having different expectations in value. How do you satisfy all of these requirements?

An elevator pitch is a brief and basic persuasive explanation telling others your story. It explains a concept in a way that any listener can understand it in a short period of time.

How do you shape your elevator pitch to fit the different stakeholders that you could randomly interact with at any moment?

The presentation of information should not be what you want to tell others, it should be what others need to hear. When stakeholders are presented with information on what they need to hear, they are able to associate the conveyed value that you would be able to provide them. If we state what we do with no consideration to the stakeholder, it creates rigidity and does not provide the same value to all stakeholders. Every square is a rectangle, but not every rectangle is a square.

The goal of an elevator speech is to create dynamic personalized value for each individual stakeholder.

There should be variability to your pitch that provides an opportunity to showcase a skill from your repertoire that the stakeholder is specifically looking for. The ability to influence others understanding by modifying a personal pitch to the environment and situation can create an instant connection.

In order to be effective, you need to be tuned into the whole interaction, not being selfish and looking for only your personal benefit from the interactions, an intuitive awareness to be able to discern in real time what the stakeholder needs at that moment.

If you are a leader, everyone you talk to is a stakeholder. It is the capacity to navigate contextual intelligence in any environment at all times.

Stop memorizing your elevator pitch! As an AT you are versatile and offer more to the stakeholders than a robotic 30 second pitch.
